Above: Ellison Ballet, Offenbach Adagio, December 2016. Two great New York City ballet schools are in action this week and worth checking out: Ellison Ballet and Ballet Academy East. BAE will present George Balanchine’s Donizetti Variations staged by artistic director, Darla Hoover, a world premiere by Jenna Lavin, Alan Hineline’s Re: Dvorak, and Lavin’s Wolf-Ferrari Suite. BAE is unique as the students perform new works and Balanchine classics. See my BAE reviews from last February and 2016. Tickets are available for the Friday through Sunday performances at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater.
Edward Ellison’s students will perform Friday and Saturday for three performances at the MMAC Theater. The Spring Showcase includes Arthur Saint-Léon’s Markitenka, original choreography by Edward Ellison, Jolanta Valeikaite, Maina Gielgud, Ursula Verduzco, and Akop Akopian, as well of classical and contemporary repertoire from the school’s recent success at Youth America Grand Prix Finals. See my reviews from Winter 2016, Spring 2016, Spring 2015, and my interview with Edward on his 10th Anniversary of his school two years ago.
