Gelsey Kirkland Ballet starts its Nutcracker run Thursday at the GK ArtsCenter in DUMBO, Brooklyn (29 Jay Street). Performances go through Sunday this week, with a similar schedule next week.
Gelsey Kirkland Ballet excels in the Nutcracker and I actually like the Kirkland version more than the ABT or NYCB works. The company goes all out, particularly doll and divertissement pieces, leading to some exciting dancing. Their Nutcracker is also easy on the wallet as adult ticket prices range from $20-$59, with tickets for children under the age of 12 at $10.
Gelsey Kirkland Ballet moved from Tribeca into its new home in Dumbo, Brooklyn two years ago. The new home is the former St. Ann’s Warehouse, a 9,000 square foot theater which seats 600. The renovated space now houses four studios in addition to office space. The cozy theater is great for dance, with all seats near the stage with nice sight lines. See my previous reviews from 2015, 2014, and 2013.
