AOL On has a clip on its upcoming documentary “city.ballet” on New York City Ballet. The debut is scheduled for November 4 and is developed and narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker.
It is comforting to hear that city.ballet is a documentary series unlike the dreadful and adolescent “Breaking Pointe”, a reality series that follows dancers from Utah-based Ballet West. The reality series dwells on the romantic adventures of the dancers and every now and then shows them at work dancing. Instead, the New York City Ballet documentary “follows several dancers in their processional lives and will be a combination of documentary-style footage mixed with interviews” and spotlights “the work involved in being a professional dancer” according to an article in The Wall Street Journal. “We don’t want ‘The Real Housewives of New York City Ballet,'” said Teresa Reichlen.
One motivation for New York City Ballet is to gain increased attendance. However, according the article, the first season of “Breaking Pointe” did not lead to a measurable uptick in Ballet West’s ticket sales or a change in its audience demographics.
