Here are two great photos by Leena Hassan (@Leenahassan) of recent London Nutcrackers. The first is of Alina Cojocaru and Vadim Muntagirov of the English National Ballet. The photo below is of Meaghan Grace Hinkis and Alexander Campbell of The Royal Ballet.
Peter Wright’s Royal Ballet version has been around for 30 years. Jane Simpson of DanceTabs provides some background.
ABT Principal Dancer Cory Stearns performed with The Royal Ballet and the Royal’s gain was ABT’s loss this Nutcracker season according to Judith Mackrell of The Guardian: “Outstanding are Itziar Mendizabal…and Cory Stearns, guesting as the Prince, whose impeccably shaped dancing is matched by impeccably mannered partnering.”
I’ve never seen Wayne Eagling’s English National Ballet’s Nutcracker. Reviews by Luke Jennings of The Guardian and Sarah Crompton of The Telegraph say it is confusing. Jennings: “It’s with the character of the Nutcracker that things get weird. Throughout the ballet, Junor Souza dances a masked version of the character while Vadim Muntagirov, who also plays the nephew of the magician Drosselmeyer (Fabian Reimair), dances him unmasked.”
