Marcelo Gomes Leaving ABT Amid Allegation

Shocking and sad news as ABT Principal Dancer Marcelo Gomes is leaving the company after a sexual misconduct allegation.
According to The New York Times, ABT was made aware of a “highly concerning allegation of sexual misconduct” by Marcelo that took place eight years ago. The allegation took place last Saturday and ABT initiated an investigation by a law firm. According to ABT, the incident did not involve any current or former members of ABT and was not related to his employment duties with the company.

No information on the alleged incident was provided. ABT’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees Andrew Barth said: “ABT does not tolerate the alleged behavior. I am profoundly disheartened by this matter,” according to The Times article.

Lisa Linden, a spokeswoman for Marcelo, said in a statement: “This is a time of reflection for Marcelo. He is gratified and strengthened by the support he has received from family, friends and colleagues. We have no further comment at this time.”

On social media, Marcelo’s longtime partner, Diana Vishneva issued a tweet warning not to “…mix shameful cases that need to be exposed with those of dubious intentions.” Dance Magazine Editor at Large Wendy Perron has been a vocal supporter of Marcelo on the matter, saying that ABT “…should be able to distinguish between shameful behavior and a small indiscretion committed by an artist who has devoted himself to the company for 20 year[s].” In another tweet, she added that ABT should have stood up for Marcelo. In a response to a tweet questioning ABT’s handling of the situation relative to New York City Ballet’s case of Artistic Director Peter Martins, Wendy said “I agree. They gave P. M. [Peter Martins] temporary leave for what was a much bigger, more consistent offense. ABT should have smarter lawyers.”
